UPA's refining members met with representatives of Utah's OSHA staff to re-introduce our industry's safety efforts and to get an overview of Utah OSHA's priorities and any concerns they may have.

Cameron Ruppe was appointed as Utah OSHA Director in the last 6 months, so this was an opportune time to get to know him and his staff and allow them to get to know Utah's refining industry and our significant efforts related to safety.  Several years ago UPA's Refining Committee established a PSM Subcommittee.  The Subcommittee was tasked with meeting regularly among all the State's refineries to educate each other through sharing ideas and practices related to process safety.  The group has made tremendous strides over the past several years in working together to lift and educate each member company through learning and teaching best practices.

Subcommittee Chair, Laura Plummer of Big West Oil, gave an overview of UPA Members' efforts to improve and maintain safety in our facilities.  Mr. Ruppe briefly addressed OSHA's priorities.  He indicated their primary objective is compliance and the safety of Utah employees.  He discussed their compliance programs including a free consultation service the agency provides to all Utah employers.  He expressed appreciation for the good work our industry is doing and urged us to continue putting safety as a top priority.
